Three kids. The oldest "Toly" is now in his 70's.
Toly graduated from high school in '52 - Bartlesville. He graduated with an undergrad from Tulsa University and went on to Vanderbilt to study Astronomy and earned his Masters in that.
Toly was always into cars and an avid race car driver and enthusiast. He started his own company Automobile Int'l.
He also started up two car dealerships with Joe Marina and wife Maty in Tulsa back in the 70's - quite successful. You've probably heard of Joe Marina Ford if you are from Tulsa.
Lots of history, post if you want more that can be shared. Quite interesting.

surprised you picked up that Centrilift stole drawings from Reda to start up. Must have spoken to retired ESP pros to get the low down and the truth. It'
s been ethics issues with those guys for a long time.
and this was the beginning of ethics issues.
when customers learned that pumps were not even close to meeting pump design curves in the early to mid 1980's, nothing was done by Centrilift and Reda. Centrilft and Reda were running used stages and not testing the units and did not even come close to meeting performance curve promises.
that is the beginning of why there is an API standard. You can thank Ray Johnson for strong ethics and correcting this. Sure he made his money this way by whistle blowing and calling out Centrilift and Reda for bad practice. But he should be congratulated and not condemned for bringing this to the attention of operators. Some people may say anything that want about Ray, but he is a great businessman, and had a loyal customer base because of great service. Operators loved him, and trusted that his product and service was the best. Everyone knows this is true.
The ESP business is like a salvage yard.
They try and get by with as much as possible & use lots of used parts and old stages. Gotta make that buck. Ask someone like Larry Crow at Centrilift. He knows all about it. It's the way they survived during the down days.

During World War II, Reda Pump in Bartlesville showed their real patriotism by having many of their employees build aircraft parts. Arutunoff was a loyal American and very loyal to his employees. He was hard driving and had a lot of personal ownership in everything that came out of Reda, sometimes almost to a fault. However, he was very loyal to his employees and his employees very loyal to him.

Arutunoff was loyal, and MOST of his employees were loyal. EXCEPT for the clods who formed Centrilift, left Arutunoff and stole his drawings to try and make their pumps and start their own company. They were not loyal and were unethical, and that's the Centrilift legacy & obviously we now know why Centrilift culture is what it is today.

I think you need to add more about ODI when talking about Bill Lawson, CEO of Franklin Electric. He was a church elder and faithful type person on Sundays. However his temper got the best of him. Any ODI employee knows the story how he was outside the yard at the plant and saw something wrong with some equipment, he grabbed an employees wallet, took the cash out, wadded it up and threw it at the machine. And said something like , "how do you like that, how do you like me throwing your money away just like you are throwing my money away". He owned a small portion of ODI and took over the presidency in the last three years. He actually was responsible for selling ODI. Dresser was interested to buy it, but he took the negotiations personnally and called Joe Brady up at Centrilift, just to spite Dresser. That's the type when his temper flew. He dressed people down quite often. Just asked ODI employees, they can all tell stories.

Downhole's memory must be fading. He is confusing Bill Lawson, CEO of Franklin Electric with Tom Brennan. Tom was always a professional and a gentlemen in his dealings with ODI employees. Bill, on the other hand, was known to go ballistic.
There are other factual errors regarding ODI in the main page, but that is for another day.

I think that if someone is going to say there are factual inaccuracies, then they should speak up and say what they are. Instead of making a blanket discrediting statement like that. Speak up, boy. What are you scared of? The truth? You know what? A lot of ESP employees are scared of their own shadows, having kept their jobs through the 80's by sucking up and keeping their chins down. Doormats. It's no wonder so many pump systems have gotten out of factories these past 20 years less than what they promised to be, The almighty short term profit dollar and keeping some job, versus professionals who won't succomb to anything less than maintaing their professional ethics.
I worked at Reda and met Mr. Arutunoff as a young man there. He spoke his mind and was upfront.
I never of course knew about his personal life, and find it interesting looking back.
But I can assure you that he was a professional and not afraid of speaking up, and sharing his opinion to try and make things right.
I'd also like to add to be careful of jealously in this industry. There's a lot of it. Don't let anyone try to smear.

you should add about the $44 million penalty Baker paid for felony convictions the following. Chad Deaton made the poorer performing divisions fire employees just before this news become public to help carry the cost of the penalty so it wouldn't affect earnings too much. God the Profit.
Screw your employees Baker. Just another example of those narcisstic suits in Houston.
